Large box ship order to Imabari, company to add giant building dock

The Japanese based Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. announced today that it had manage to secure an order for eleven 20, 000 TEU containerships.
They will have measurements of roughly 400 m x 59 m and are to be constructed in a large newbuilding dry dock of approximately 600 m length x 80 m breadth which is going to be constructed on land that the shipbuilder reclaimed, near its Marugame City headquarters. Imabari plans to invest around Yen 40-billion in the project regarding the new Marugame facility that will include a block factory and three 1, 200-ton goliath cranes.

The first of the giant containerships is scheduled to be delivered in 2018. A construction permit has been granted to the new building dock and the initial building processes are to begin during the following month, with expectations being that it will be completed for October 2016.
Despite the fact that Imabari did not provide any information regarding the byer of the 20, 000 TEU vessels, it is very likely that they are the same vessels as the eleven 18, 000 TEU ships of the same hull dimensions and the same delivery horizon, that were mentioned yesterday by Taiwan's Evergreen Marine in regards to time charter them from Imabari affiliated owner Shoei Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. Mr. Yukito Higaki is the president of Marubeni as well as Shoei.
This raises the question of why some of the vessels are said to have a capacity of 20, 000 TEUs while the others are in the 18, 000 TEU capacity range? The issue maybe derives from the potential difference between the nominal maximum TEU capacity of the vessels and the actual number of containers intended to be carried by the operator. The biggest box ship operator in the world, Maersk Line, for example quotes vessel capacity in regard to filled TEUs with an average of 14 tonnes per box total weight. This value is always lower when compared to the straight TEU capacity.
Despite all this, the vessels ordered to Imabari are nothing other than gigantic. Meanwhile, in March the company will deliver the largest containership ever built in Japan, which will be the first in a total of five 14, 000 TEU ships ordered by "K" Line.

JAPAN – After months of speculation, and as we hinted at in our story earlier this week, the first official order has been placed for series of 20,000 TEU container ships. Imabari Shipbuilding has secured the newbuilding order via the Marubeni Corporation, for an as yet unnamed end user, for eleven units of 20,000 TEU Ultra-Large Container Carriers, measuring around 400 metres in length by 59 metres wide. The first vessel is scheduled to be completed in early 2018.
The deal has been strongly linked with Taiwanese box freight carrier, Evergreen Line, which earlier this week announced an agreement with Imabari affiliate Shoei Kisen Kaisha for eleven 18,000 TEU ships with similar hull dimensions and delivery schedule. Mr Yukito Higaki is president of both the two Japanese based groups Marubeni and Shoei.
Other industry analysts are predicting that the vessels may actually be destined for Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) to operate on various long term container charters. Japan has been losing ground as the supplier of choice of late for these box vessel newbuild with orders for the huge ships latterly going to other Asian nations such as South Korea and China.
In order to accommodate construction of these Ultra-Large newbuilding vessels, Imabari has decided to construct a large newbuilding dry dock, measuring 600m length by 80m breadth, on about 100,000 m2of reclaimed land, located next to its Marugame headquarters. Imabari says it will invest about 40 billion Yen in the new facility which will include a block factory and three 1,200 tonne of goliath cranes and expects the facility to be complete by October 2016.
Imabari is no newcomer to building large vessels of this type with over 200 constructed and has previously held the record for the biggest box vessel built stretching back to a 4,800 TEU ship way back in 1995.

The 2M Alliance of Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company, which currently has 31 per cent of weekly westbound capacity, will extend its leading market position, but not by so much as to attract further scrutiny from European competition regulators.

Newark's Journal of Commerce cited the London-based analysts as saying there could be up to three new weekly services at the beginning of the second half with the scheduled delivery of additional ultra large containerships.

This is expected to "give shippers even more choice and likely suppress freight rates".

The O3 trio - CMA CGM, UASC, and CSCL - has the largest number of 13,000 TEU+ vessels due for delivery this year and is the smallest alliance in the trade with 21 per cent of weekly capacity. It's set to leap frog ahead of the G6 Alliance that accounts for 24 per cent of weekly capacity by year-end.

G6 carriers Hapag-Lloyd, NYK, OOCL, APL, Hyundai Merchant Marine and MOL, also have the weakest port coverage and transit times, while their lack of large vessels will cost them market share and cramp their ability to cut slot costs.

With the CKYHE carriers - Cosco, "K" Line, Yang Ming, Hanjin Shipping and Evergreen - accounting for 24 per cent of capacity, the four alliances control every service on the trade. 

"Closer inspection of the schedules reveals that the alliances are far from uniform and between them they have created a pretty well-balanced network with wide port coverage at both ends of the trade," Drewry noted.

Shippers can choose between 14 weekly services from Shanghai to Rotterdam, and can call on 16 carriers to get the most competitive freight rate quotes. Time-sensitive shippers also enjoy a wide array of transit times between the two ports, ranging from 28 to 36 days.

Container Shipping Line Signs Up for Eleven 18,000 TEU Freighters

New Generation Giant Box Vessels Continue to Proliferate 

TAIWAN – The Evergreen Group, owners of Evergreen Line which currently lies in fifth position* as the world’s largest container shipping group in terms of TEU space, has announced the signing of time charter agreements for five more 18,000 TEU vessels to add to the six similar ships signed up by Evergreen Marine Corp. (EMC) and its subsidiary last December. The deal is with Japanese group Shoei Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (Shoei) and the craft are planned for delivery from 2018 through 2019.
With a hull of around 400 metres and a beam of 59 metres all the vessels will incorporate the most advanced shipbuilding technologies including optimised hull profiles and minimum ballast water requirements to maximise cargo carrying capability. The vessels are designed to have greater hull depth with the intent of strengthening the overall structure and aid safer navigation. The ship’s new generation G-type main engine is developed with a longer stroke to operate at lower speeds with capability to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emission up to 7% than traditional main engines.
In line with the stringent eco-friendly criteria that Evergreen and other box carriers now employ, the ships are equipped with various environmental protection devices and fully comply with the regulations of international maritime agencies. Ship-to-shore real time data transmission system is introduced to enable operation departments on land to monitor navigation statistics and weather condition, analyse the data and take in time action for speed optimisation and route planning at sea.

Evergreen says it has taken this investment decision to introduce 18,000 TEU vessels based on market demand and the capacity requirement for joint service. The group says that current service cooperation arrangements with its alliance partners will enable Evergreen to efficiently utilise the capacity and garner the potential economic benefits represented by the larger vessels which are now the fashion for long haul ocean freight carriers.
In light of the continuing demand growth in shipping market, Evergreen Group continues to adopt the latest technologies for fleet renewal. Along with the ongoing delivery of its own thirty 8,500 TEU L type vessels, a programme which began in July 2012 and is due to be completed this year, Evergreen has already taken delivery of five 8,800 TEU and ten 13,800 TEU chartered ships with another ten chartered units of 14,000 TEU to be delivered in 2016/17.
With the delivery of these, the Evergreen fleet consists of in total sixty-six ships within the medium to ultra-large size range, the carrier plans to redeliver currently chartered vessels upon expiry of their charter periods. This programme is intended to rejuvenate the company’s fleet, intending to enhance the quality of service offered to customers and reinforcing the line’s competitiveness in the marketplace.

Box weight verification mandate takes effect next year

EVERY laden export container to have a verified container weight as a condition for shipboard loading from July 1 now that the UN's International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has adopted amendments to the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS) that will require the new measure, reports the American Journal of Transportation. 

All parties involved in the international transportation of maritime containers, including shippers, freight forwarders, packers, NVOCCs, carriers, and marine terminal operators, will need to take measures to ensure that they are prepared to fulfil the new SOLAS regulatory requirement before the implementation date arrives. 

"There currently is more than a year to get ready. That time should not be wasted. All parties should use the time that is available to understand what will be required of them, and to prepare to be able to meet those requirements before July 1, 2016." said the report.

To help promote an understanding of these SOLAS amendments, the World Shipping Council has released a three page synopsis of what the SOLAS requirement containers.

To handle this problem, the maritime world has requested the IMO to consider the mandatory weighing of all containers.
In September 2013 IMO reached a compromise proposal to weighing, concluding that shippers should be required to verify the gross.
The weight must be transferred “sufficiently in advance to be used in the preparation of the ship’s stowage plan.”
The lack of this data will result in the packed container not being loaded onto the ship.
If the proposal becomes accepted it would take effect in July 2016.

Also, shippers would want to work with international organizations such as UNECE and industry stakeholders to identify the currently witnessed poor practices and developing best practices. Together, we can all promulgate these to those that handle and load containers,”the Council said.

“It is now clear that a holistic approach is needed to tackle properly the safety problem seriously,” 
ESC added.
In the end, according to ESC, there are still several topics still pending regarding weighing of containers:
• Deadline to submit weight
• Open access to PCS
• Responsibility of the tare of the container

Hoegh Osaka Update: Preparations to unload luxury vehicles have already started

Today (Tuesday), experts started preparations to finally move vehicles and heavy plant machinery that were stuck on the Hoegh Osaka car transporter.
The bigger portion of the 1, 400 luxury vehicles and 105 pieces of plant equipment, aboard the large vessel berthed at the Southampton Docks, should be driven off in the next couple of days according to expectations.

This news come following a statement made by the inspector in charge of the investigation that the 51, 000-tonne ship has sustained minor damage and owners having expressed their intention of bringing it back into service once the necessary repairs are completed.
During last night, teams attempted to move a large quarrying machine that was blocking the entrance so that they could create a risk-free pathway for the other vehicles aboard. Owners Hoegh commented that the rescue mission is going according to schedule. A spokesperson for the company further said:
“We hope that we could begin discharging the cargo and complete the tasks at hand by end of this current week or early next week.”
He commented that most of the vehicles have been held in place by their lashings, excluding a few large ones located at the main deck. He also added that despite previous preliminary estimates, there was a smaller number of vehicles immersed by the water leaking into the below decks.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) are preparing reports after having completed their initial inspections.
The vessel had been deliberately ran aground on Bramble Bank, close to Southampton, on the 3rd of January after it had begun listing not long after having left the port. Salvage crews carried out the biggest rescue mission in the history of the Solent waters in order to bring back the ship to port on Thursday last week.

Cars which were being transported on a cargo ship when it ran aground in the Solent, are finally coming off.
More than 1,400 Land Rovers, Minis and Jaguars were securely lashed down while being transported on the Hoegh Osaka, which was run aground on Bramble Bank on 3 January.
There are also 105 pieces of construction equipment on board the Hoegh Osaka.
The operation to remove all the equipment is expected to take at least until Friday.

The Hoegh Osaka was carrying a large fleet of expensive cars - including Bentleys worth up to £237,500 each - from Southampton when it ran aground on Bramble Bank in the Solent after listing.
There were fears for the valuable cargo, but it has been confirmed today that new Range Rovers were the first of 1,400 vehicles to be driven off the 51,000 tonne ship, which is now moored back at Southampton Docks in Hampshire.
Some of the cars had visible damage on the exterior.

Jaguars and a £260,000 Rolls-Royce Wraith are on board the Singapore-registered ship, but it is not yet known the extent of the damage to the remaining vehicles.
Experts disclosed today that only a small number of vehicles are expected to have suffered water damage. 
All of the cargo, which includes the cars and other equipment, will be taken off the ship by the end of this week or early next week, according to Hoegh Autoliners.
Those which are damaged or do not start up will be towed off the ship.

A spokesman for Hoegh Autoliners' Navigate Response said: "There is only limited damage to the cargo.
"Most of the lashings held, and only a couple of pieces - large machinery - shifted.
"Water damage only occurred on the lowest deck and on the one side the ship was listing."
The spokesman added: "Only preliminary checks have been made on the vehicles at this point. We will be coordinating with other companies, including manufacturers and dealers, to carry out a full assessment of the cargo."
The vessel was run aground by the captain as it began to list badly just 45 minutes after leaving the port of Southampton on January 3.
The cargo ship, which is 180 metres long and 32 metres wide, had been stranded off the English coast for 19 days before finally arriving back in Southampton, Hampshire, on January 22 guided by two tugs.

The carrier, which has a length of 180 meters and is 33 meters wide, had remained stranded off the English coast for the duration of 19 days before finally arriving back in Southampton, Hampshire, on the 22nd of January, via the help and guidance of two tugs.

Maersk Line’s Triple E container ship behemoth Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller left the Spain’s Port of Algeciras yesterday loaded with 18,168 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), beating the previous world record held by another Maersk’s Triple E, Maersk Mary, which left the same port back in August 2014 carrying 17, 603 TEUs.

At the time of its entry into service in 2013, Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller, the first of 20 Triple E class container ships to be built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), had the largest cargo capacity in TEU of any vessel, and was the longest ship in service worldwide. With a cargo capacity of 18,270 TEU containers, the ship left the Spanish port with only 102 empty slots.
”Personally I am both very proud, and humbled, to be the Captain of the iconic Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller, and to be the first vessel to cross the 18.000 TEU limit. All crew members have shared their excitement with cameras, questions, and off course a lot of planning and calculations” said Captain Niels Vestergaard Pedersen.

Back in 2013 when it became operational, the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller, the first in a total of 20 Triple E class container vessels to be constructed by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), had the largest load capacity regarding TEU of any ship, and held the title of being the longest operating vessel in the world. Having a cargo capacity of 18,270 TEU containers, the vessel departed from the Spanish port with just 102 empty slots.
