In a change at the top, Forth Ports chief executive Charles Hammond has been named as the new chair of the United Kingdom Major Ports Group (UKMPG).
Mr Hammond’s appointment was announced at a UKMPG board meeting in May, the organisation said, with the new chair taking over from James Cooper from Associated British Ports.
Saying that he was “delighted” to take on his new role, the Forth Ports boss said: “As the UK approaches Brexit, it needs its ports — which handle 95% of the UK’s physical trade — as its main global gateways more than ever.
“UKMPG members are great examples of the ‘industrial strategy’ that the government wants to see in action today — highly productive, resilient and investing for the long term.”
UKMPG has also decided to appoint an extra vice chair with a particular focus on health, safety and skills. This new vice chair role will be filled by David Brown, The Bristol Port Company’s chief executive.
“The safety and health of our colleagues has to be our top priority and this vice chair role demonstrates the commitment of UKMPG members to this crucial area,” said Tim Morris, UKMPG’s chief executive.
PD Ports’ chief operating officer, Jerry Hopkinson, will take over the original vice chair role from Belfast Harbour’s Roy Adair.
“All three [new appointees] are highly-experienced leaders with a passion for growing the UK major ports sector’s already substantial contribution even further — both through strengthening the UK’s ability to trade with the world and boosting investment and growth in major ports areas,” noted Mr Morris.
