Our world-class facilities and excellent location means that we’re able to serve a variety of different businesses, connecting Scotland to the rest of the world.
Last month, FT Pipeline Systems, suppliers of steel pipes to the rest of the UK, needed to offload its cargo at KGV Clydeport. Here, its Director Ian Harding, talks about how moving large, irregular loads has the potential to be challenging.
The supply of potable water, via pipeline, to towns and cities requires materials capable of meeting the challenges of both the natural and built environments. Steel is such a resilient material, suitable not only for the supply of drinking water but also for the transportation of wastewater and sewage. Steel pipes enjoy a long life expectancy too, reducing the need for maintenance. But because of their weight and shape, they can be a real challenge to move.
When our cargo arrived at the port, the team at Peel Ports were absolutely excellent in both their attitude and work rate when offloading our 900mm diameter, 13m long steel water pipes.  The foremen, Gordon and Andy, were polite, hardworking and easy to get on with and were clearly experienced.  Their offloading teams had the same approach and a much needed can-do attitude about how best to manage the pipes.
The pipes were handled safely and with care, and no damage occurring in the offloading and laying down process.  This came down to the undoubted skill of the crane driver, and the care taken in the hold by staff who were attaching the slings and directing the crane driver as to where and when to move the pipes.
All of our ad hoc requests for moving pipes around and unloading pallets and general movement of all our goods around the dock area were dealt with promptly and efficiently and communication with all Peel Ports staff has been first rate at all stages.
Our overall impression of Peel Ports is that they are a company who deal professionally with their customers, understand their concerns and react quickly and smoothly to meet requests.
Nothing is too much trouble and they have a wealth of expertise which means they can work out answers to any cargo situation. On top of this is the overriding helpfulness of the personnel involved. Without them, none of this would be possible.  A well organised and impressive operation, and we look forward to working with them again in the future.
