Kalmar & Navis Robotize Australia Terminal


Kalmar and Navis have published a new video to demonstrate the success of its OneTerminal automation system at the Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT) in Melbourne, Australia.

Owned by International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), VICT is one of the most advanced container terminals in the world.

When ICTSI took over the terminal in 2014, the OneTerminal solution from Kalmar and Navis was selected to design and coordinate every aspect of the facility’s operations, as well as helping the terminal operator to prevent delays, integration problems and other bottlenecks.
With an annual handling capacity of over a million TEU, the 35-hectare terminal is now the first fully automated container handling facility in the world.

The OneTerminal deployment at VICT includes a Kalmar Automatic Stacking Crane (ASC) system, which consists of 20 ASC units, 11 Kalmar AutoShuttles, an automated truck handling system, the Kalmar Terminal Logistics System (TLS) and the Navis N4 Terminal Operating System (TOS).
As well as boosting the efficiency of its operations, VICT CEO Anders Dømmestrup has underlined that full automation under the OneTerminal solution is creating a much safer and cleaner work environment.

Commenting on the deployment of digital systems at the terminal, like the N4 TOS, IT Manager Jon Wheeler reveals how the integrated service offered by Navis and Kalmar enable VICT to manage multiple kinds of operations through “a single pane of glass”.
In addition to this, the two companies have provided training and handover services to the workforce at VICT, allowing for a smooth transition to OneTerminal and the effective management of terminal operations.
