THE A13 will be closed for two separate weekends next month as road widening works continue.
Thurrock Council is widening a 2.3 mile section of the A13 from two to three lanes in both directions between the A128 (Orsett Cock roundabout) and the A1014 (The Manorway, Stanford-le-Hope) in what is one of the largest local authority-managed road schemes in the country.
The £79million scheme, which has received funding from the government and DP World London Gateway, is progressing well, with drainage installation and earthworks underway and piling works at Horndon Road Bridge now complete.
To enable the next phase of the project to be completed safely, two weekend-long closures of the A13 are required.
The first road closure, for piling works, will affect a short section of the A13 in both directions directly beneath the Orsett Cock roundabout. The closure will start at 9pm on Friday, 16 August and continue until 5am on Monday, 19 August 2019.
Traffic will be diverted via the exit slip roads onto the Orsett Cock roundabout and back onto the A13 via the entry slip roads.
The second road closure, for the demolition of Saffron Gardens Farm Bridge, will close the A13 in both directions between the A128 (Orsett Cock roundabout) and the A1014 (Stanford-le-Hope). The closure will start at 9pm on Friday, 30 August and continue until 5am on Monday, 2 September 2019. Additional works by BT to install new communications cables will also be taking place at the same time.
Non-local traffic is urged to avoid the A13 during this closure and use alternative routes such as the A130, A127 and M25 to minimise delays to their journeys and reduce the likelihood of congestion in Orsett, Horndon on the Hill and Stanford-le-Hope. Local traffic will be diverted via the A1013 Stanford Road.
Cllr Mark Coxshall, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Strategic Planning, said: “We recognise any closures on a major road such as the A13 will cause some inconvenience, however we are doing everything possible to ensure that the widening works are completed in the safest, least disruptive and most efficient way possible.
“I would like to thank people in advance for their co-operation as we complete this important project.
“Once the scheme is finished in autumn 2020 there will be a continuous three lane carriageway from the M25 to Stanford-le-Hope, reducing congestion, improving journey times and supporting further economic growth.”
Steve Mack, project director for Kier, the contractor working on behalf of Thurrock Council to deliver the scheme, said: “Working through the weekend is the safest way to complete these works and significantly reduces the number of overnight closures required afterwards to complete these works.”
