Efforts to investigate the MSC Zoe, the containership which lost 342 containers on January 2, 2019, in the North Sea is being hindered by a defect in its black box, according to Dutch news outlet BNNVARA.
According to reports, the defect in the black box, which should hold all the real-time data relevant to the ship’s condition, was discovered by the Port Authority of Bremerhaven, where it was noted that the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) was ‘not as required.’
MSC responded to BNNVARA’s report which read as follows: “MSC wants to clarify that the MSC Zoe had a functioning Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) on board and that the data successfully downloaded from the trip.”
It was widely believed at the time that the MSC Zoe, which is one of the largest containerships in the world and has a capacity of 19,200 TEU, lost the cargo a very heavy storm in the North Sea.
Some of the containers washed up on the West Frisian Islands, a chain of islands just of the Dutch coast.
