DISPOSAL OF RMG’S – LONDON THAMESPORT

In an effort to centralise container throughput, Hutchison Ports moved container operations from Thamesport to its flagship UK port at Felixstowe. Thamesport is primarily used for bulk and general cargo. This left a number of container handling assets surplus to requirements. Hutchison Ports tasked O’Brien’s to remove assets and release the scrap value tied up.
The scope of works included:
  • The removal of 11 RMG Cranes
  • The removal of 2 RMG Cranes over live rails way tracks
  • The removal of all crane rails
  • The processing of all scrap metal
To help release as much value in the scrap metal as possible, a cost-effective method of demolition was required. Controlled collapse was selected to eliminate the need for heavy-lift mobile cranes. Two of the RMG’s were located on the main train line in and out of the port. This meant the works needed to be completed in the quickest time possible without causing any damage to the railway track. To do this our team designed and installed protection to absorb the impact of the crane during the collapse. The works were completed within one 12 hour rail closure, causing very little disruption to port operations.
The O’Brien’s team carried out all aspects of this project including:
  • Initial site survey & calculations
  • Provision of a ground impact study
  • Provision of risk analysis
  • Implementation of environmental control measures
  • Design of unique pre-weakening operation
  • Design & installation of rail track protection
  • The controlled collapse of all 13 cranes
  • Removal from the site of all demolition arisings
  • Planning, supervision and execution of all works
