Cruise ships will bring £40m into Harwich

CRUISE ships will run from Harwich to Norway and Southern Europe from next year.

Celebrity Cruises says its trips will bring £40million in to the town.

The firm will run 2,000-passenger cruises on 12-night trips to the Norweigan fjords and European wine regions, between May and October 2013.

A spokesman for the firm said a report for the port of Southampton revealed the turnaround of a cruise ship is worth around £2.5million to the surrounding area.

He said: “Based on this, the new deployment from Celebrity Cruises will deliver about £40million in knock-on economic impact to the Harwich area.

“Our decision to base Celebrity Infinity in Harwich, affirms our belief in the strength of the UK business. It is in direct response to increased demand for more Celebrity Cruises holiday experiences.”

Stephen Mayzes, councillor responsible for tourism at Tendring Council, said no matter how long passengers spend in Harwich and Dovercourt it would be a great thing for the towns.

He said: “Businesses work incredibly hard all year round in Harwich.

“Whether they are stopping for an overnight stay or a cup of tea, it all helps the local economy.

“It is great that Harwich is being used more. More people will know of the area and this all adds to our campaign for Bathside Bay.

“We welcome any discussion with Celebrity Cruises to see if there are any opportunities that would help them and us.”

Full details of Celebrity Cruises’ 2013 summer trips will be announced next month and will go on sale in mid-March this year.
