Another forwarder steps in to London Gateway fray

UK-based logistics provider Claridon Group says it will urge its clients to re-route cargo through London Gateway when the new port opens in 2013.

The company is the second in the past two weeks to say it prefers the new DP World facility to Felixstowe after Essex-based The Finishing Line also publicly voiced its support (click here for previous article).

Observers will note that both of those companies are located within a few miles of the port and that neither have commited to moving onto the adjoining logistics park, although both say they will consider such a move.

Claridon Managing Director Chris Scott told Lloyd’s Loading List.com that the group had selected its current site specifically in order to take advantage of the new terminal.

"We’re two miles away and moved into these premises 12 years ago in preparation for the port opening. For us the location is very important and we’ll be re-routing cargo that currently comes through Felixstowe and Southampton."

‪Claridon, which turned over £6 million in 2011, manages approximately eight thousand teu per year on behalf of cargo owners shipping to and from Asia, Europe, North and South America.

Scott added: “We ship thousands of containers every year to and from Asia and when London Gateway opens, we will be taking advantage of the location and using it to cut supply chain costs for our customers spread across the UK. Having a port closer to where the containers need to go means that we can significantly reduce landside haulage costs.”

Charles Meaby Commercial Director for London Gateway said: “We welcome Claridon’s commitment to London Gateway. It’s a great example of what we will be delivering for businesses across the UK. My team meets with local, regional and national companies everyday now to show them how we will help them grow their business for the future. It’s a really exciting time for the industry.”
