Felixstowe: Strong winds force port to close

GUSTS of more than 45mph struck Britain’s biggest container port this afternoon – forcing quayside cranes to stop work.

Both rail and yard operations were called to a halt after wind speeds recorded at the Port of Felixstowe exceeded operational limits.
“For the safety of all port users we are currently restricting access to operational areas,” said a port spokesman.
“Vehicles are being marshalled on site and will be processed through to operational areas as soon as it is safe to do so.”
Haulage companies have been contacted and advised there may be delays and that truckers may wish to consider re-scheduling their arrivals.
At this time Operation Stack has not been put into effect.
The port can hold around 300 vehicles on spare areas withinin the dock and some Felixstowe-based drivers are able to park up and wait at their depots.

Please be advised that we expect to stop ALL operations have stopped due to high winds. At present, seaside operations have allready been ceased. As soon as any changes occur, we will inform you accordingly.

Pls. be advised that land-side operations have resumed. Land-side operations resumed as of 21:15

Typical... Get winded off at work, only for the wind to drop enough to work the last hour!. Another UK Port comment.

Its not just Felixstowe that stops for wind.
