Construction of DP World’s Turkish terminal set to get underway

  • Dubai-based terminal operator says construction of 1.3 million TEU capacity terminal in Istanbul will begin soon

DP World will soon begin construction works on its new Yarimca container terminal, according to a top official at the Dubai-based terminal operator.
The new terminal, to be located on the Asian side of Istanbul, will be wholly-owned by DP World and will boast an initial capacity of 1.3 million TEU when completed.
Speaking at a conference on Sunday, Rashid Abdulla, the senior vice-president of DP World's global operations, said that the project is part of ten major port developments to be carried out by the company in both emerging and developed markets by 2020.
“These projects include mega projects like London Gateway, Rotterdam Gateway, and terminal 2 and 3 at Jebel Ali,” said Abdulla.
The expansion of DP World’s flagship will take the terminal operator’s domestic container handling capacity up to 19 million TEU.
In total, the ten projects will increase DP World’s total handling capacity to 102 million TEU by 2020. DP World’s total handling capacity in 2011 was 69.4 million TEU.
DP World handled a total of 27.5 million TEU in the first-half of this year, according to Abdulla, with year-on-year growth of 76 percent.
