Automatic Hook May Prove a Boon to Handling Bulk Cargo and General Freight

UK product solutions company, Red Plant, has introduced an innovative new automatic crane hook which promises to remove the risk associated with port operatives performing the dangerous duty of hooking or unhooking a load.
The Elebia Evo crane hook can be used with quayside cranes or cranes used onboard offshore support vessels and across any industry where lifting is required – including the construction, mining and aerospace sectors.
It works by creating a magnetic field that attracts and guides a lifting ring or sling. The hook can then be closed around the ring remotely with no handling or rigging required by port operatives.
The hook has been tried and tested at Spanish ports and now Red Plant are looking at bringing it to the UK ports and commercial marine markets. Gary Taylor, Red Plant spokesperson told Port Strategy that 60-70% of Spanish ports are already using these hooks.
He says that the Port of Felixstowe and Peel Ports have already shown interest in the UK.
Despite the fact that these hooks aren't cheap, Mr Taylor says that the Port of Alicante saw a return on investment in just two months.
“They make the lifting process faster and safer. They are a high end product and you can’t attach a price to safety", he said to PS.
See the hooks in action at Mercator Media’s Seawork International commercial marine exhibition from 25-27 June this year on stand number C71.
Red Plant will also be exhibiting at TOC Europe during the same week.
