Ninth crewman still missing after fatal incident in ItalianPort of Genoa Port
Italian authorities have found an eighth body at the scene of last week’s fatal ship collision in the Port of Genoa.
The body was recovered from the underneath the wreckage of the port’s former 54-metre control tower, which collapsed after the 200-metre Jolly Nero cargo ship collided with the structure late last Tuesday. A ninth crewman is still missing.
Video footage has also been released by authorities revealing the true extent of the damage, and how it was nothing short of a miracle that a number of people inside the control tower at the time of impact survived.
Investigators are currently focusing their efforts on the cause of the crash, which happened during relatively calm conditions. According to local media, engine failure is the probable cause although they are not ruling out human error or problems with the cables linking the ship to tug boats towing the vessel into the habour.
The Port of Genoa is the busiest port in Italy by cargo tonnage, and the second largest in the county in terms of container volumes after the transhipment Port of Gioia Tauro.
