RO-RO OPERATIONS AT PORT OF FELIXSTOWE

With all the containers that come through The Port Of Felixstowe we tend to forget about our Dooley Ro / Ro terminal. This job is hugely skilled with vey unsociable hours but they cositently have very high levels of productivity.

Ro-Ro cargo operations continue to form an integral part of the daily activities at the Port of Felixstowe.
These activities are centred on Dooley Terminal’s berths 3 & 4, which provide common-user Ro-Ro capacity with lock-free access, rapid mooring/un-mooring, 700 trailer parking slots, and secure ISPS-compliant terminal facilities – including a high specification surfacing and security fencing, and sophisticated camera systems for the recording of cargo condition through the gatehouse complex.
BERTH 3
Berth 3 has a 174 metre quay, with a minimum depth alongside of 7.3 metres. It incorporates an elevating, dual lane Ro-Ro bridge that is 43.6 metres long, 9.1 metres wide, with an end width of 17 metres and load capacity of 120 tonnes. The berth can be accessed at all states of the tides by bow- and stern-loading vessels up to 146 metres in length, with a beam of 24.4 metres.
BERTH 4
Berth 4 provides deep-sea Ro-Ro and container handling facilities. It has a 214 metre quay equipped with a 140 tonne capacity; double width, elevating Ro-Ro bridge with a minimum depth alongside of 9.5 metres.

DFDS SEAWAYS

Ro-Ro operations are predominantly focused on providing a high level of service and commitment to DFDS Seaways, on their three-vessel service that provides 16 sailings weekly to Vlaardingen in the Netherlands.
The three vessels currently operating on this route are the Flandria Seaways, purpose-built and developed for the Felixstowe - Vlaardingen route, capable of carrying 121 trailers with a high reefer component, and the Britannia Seaways and Suecia Seaways – both capable of carrying 177 trailers each.
Working in partnership with DFDS, 2013 will see the introduction by the Port of Felixstowe of new auto-gate systems to provide self-service for drivers booking into and out of the terminal. With a dedicated driver services lane for dangerous goods and other extraordinary cargo, this change will increase the in-gate lanes from one to four, and out-gates from one to two, thereby significantly reducing queuing and waiting time for drivers.
