The Maritime Accident Investigation Board has released its report on the accident on board the Emma Maersk February 1, when the entire engine was filled with water after an accident in a mechanical Sternthruster .
The Sternthruster was located in the aft part of the ship's shaft tunnel by which the tunnel was filled with water . The bulkhead between the tunnel and the main engine could then not resist the water pressure and eventually also the main engine room flooded .

The situation was complicated, because the ship had just opened a passage in convoy through the Suez Canal . Loss of the ship 's propulsion , power , steering capability and maneuverability could be foreseen and also occurred.

Despite a number of technical breakdowns and system weaknesses the organization board remained energetic, and despite structural bar collapse the ship's officers and crew managed to limit the emergency and bring the ship to dock at the Suez Canal Container Terminal , with no injury or pollution of the marine environment .
