Evergreen looks to new ways to develop wider role in new CKYHE

TAIWAN's Evergreen, now a member of the CKYH shipping alliance, is exploring new ways to expand its cooperation with fellow alliance members Cosco, "K" Line, Yang Ming and Hanjin Shipping.

The decision is a U-turn for Evergreen, which in the past had shied away formal container shipping alliance, preferring the flexibility of loose knit arrangements with other ocean liners.

Another strategic shift has been Evergreen's investment in 14,000-TEU ships after years of capping the size of its vessels at 8,500-TEU. This view changed after it realised along with other major carriers that more fuel-efficient mega ships offered greater economies of scale.

With the landscape of the global box shipping industry about to undergo a major transformation through the emergence of three dominant alliances - the P3, Grand Alliance and now CKYHE - Evergreen was prepared to go further.

"In the future, we are seeking further cooperation either with individual members or to join the alliance in other markets such as north-south trades and regional feeder routes in order to enhance service frequency and widen geographic coverage," the line said in an emailed reply to Lloyd's List.

Evergreen has individual service co-operation arrangements with the four founder members of the CKYH Alliance, and said it could extend these relationships in one of two ways. CKYHE plans to start operations on April 1.

As a member of the CKYHE Alliance, it will contribute 17 vessels in total, comprising both 8,500 TEU and 13,800 TEU ships.
