L148 Safety in Docks: Approved Code of Practice and guidance (ACOP) covers safety in dock operations and is aimed at those who have a duty to comply with provisions of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. This includes people who control dock premises, suppliers of plant and equipment, dock employers, managers, safety officers, safety representatives and workers.
The ACOP has been developed through close consultation with employer and employee representatives, and has been designed to address both the larger end of the industry as well as those engaged in dock work in small harbours. The focus is on helping dutyholders of all sizes to easily understand the key requirements needed to comply with the general duties of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and other relevant statutory provisions.
This publication also provides details of relevant guidance that has been developed by the Health and Safety Executive, Port Skills and Safety and Unite the Union and others to help employers, employees and the self-employed to comply with the law.
This ACOP only addresses some specific dock-related issues and complying with this ACOP alone will not be sufficient to fulfil your duties under health and safety law. You will also need to refer to other ACOPs and Regulations for more general matters.

Are you an employee

All workers are entitled to work in environments where risks to their health and safety are properly controlled. Under health and safety law, the primary responsibility for this is down to employers.
Worker s have a duty to take care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by your actions at work. Workers must co-operate with employers and co-workers to help everyone meet their legal requirements .
As a worker, if you have specific queries or concerns relating to health and safety in your workplace, talk to your employer, manager/supervisor or a health and safety representative.

Comments

  1. good info and every safety representative should read this. Safety in Ports has come a long way but we need to be educated so that advantages are not taken on our good will to work in not so safe conditions, we all know that management will only be to happy for us to push the limits for productivity until something goes wrong, then you will be dropped like a hot brick, and guest hows fault it will be.

We also need to be much more aware of health in Ports, diesel fumes, fatigue, stress, wear and tear on your body, noise, money will not help if you cannot enjoy life in your retirement

  2. It is important to have safety in the work place to avoid any accident or injuries. Health and safety training should be provided to the workers first.
