VIDEO: Long Beach Stevedores “Well-Oiled Machine”

Long Beach Stevedores Well-Oiled Machine

Shipping containers across the sea is just a portion of the overall transport process of goods from one destination to another. The journey of huge piles of containers stacked onboard ever growing ships is not over once unloaded in ports.

For some, it is just the beginning. It is up to the “well-oiled stevedore machine” at the port to organize everything and send the containers to their final destination. This part of the job is often given less importance that the shipping itself, but it is as significant in the overall transportation chain.
Organization is key for stevedoring. One mistake could cost millions of dollars and hours or even days of effort.
The following video brings you a taste of  how this well-orchestrated process at the Port of Long Beach looks in practise:

  1. Didn't see much lashing going on can't be a very important part of the process after all they only secure the boxes to the ship.

  2. They do it a bit different to Felixstowe over there Peter, once a ship arrives they flood it with Stevedores to get it unlashed and then do the same before the ship is finished and ready to depart.

  3. Could Felixstowe management learn from that? mind you they need an open mind and not to be blinkered

    1. They could start up a " project " and a steering committee, they could then spend a year or so pondering as to what to do. At the end of the day what ever saves money will be best, the customers and health and safety can take a back seat.

  4. You know the Felixstowe set up as well then. They do look good on paper though, in practice it does really matter as no one cares how it works. A manager says all is well and that is good enough, people need to look deeper into the detail. Can of worms comes to mind
