Transport and shipping information provider Dyamar B.V. has recently released a report entitled ‘Intra Mediterranean Container Trades’ which sets out to dissect the intra-Mediterranean container trade.
The report provides an assessment of overall trade with respect to volumes, capacities and throughputs.
In terms of connectivity, the Aegean sub trade is ranked first with 275 trade connections; the Black Sea is at the bottom with just 71.
With respect to individual port connectivity, Piraeus, Greece is at the top with 54 connections.
The Port of Algeciras in Spain handled the largest transhipment volume in 2013 with almost 4 million TEU, ahead of Port Said, Egypt’s 3.8 million TEU.

In terms of intra-Mediterranean carriers, Mediterranean Shipping Company is the undisputed leader with an overall capacity share of 25%.
Marseilles-based CMA CGM comes second with 15%, while fast growing Izmir/Turkey-headquarteredArkas Line is third, operating 15% of all intra-Mediterranean capacity.

Combined, the top five carriers, which include the two Danish companies Maersk Line and Unifeeder, account for 60% of the ships and 68% of capacity for intra-Mediterranean trade.
Average intra-Mediterranean vessel capacity is 1,200 TEU; however, Hapag-Lloyd deploys the largest ship with a 3,600 TEU capacity.
