World’s Largest Containership Named

South Korean shipbuilding giant Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) announced today that it held a naming ceremony for the world’s largest containership, the first of five 19,000 TEU containerships ordered from China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) in May 2013.

The containership was named CSCL Globe by He Li Jun, wife of Xu Li Rong, chairman of China Shipping Group.
The world’s largest containership, measuring 400.0 m in length, 58.6 m in width and 30.5 m in depth, is as large as four soccer fields, and will be deployed on the Asia-Europe trade loop after being handed over to the owner within this month.
The CSCL Globe will feature a 77,200 bhp electronically controlled main engine to enhance fuel efficiency by automatically controlling fuel consumption according to the ship’s speed and sea conditions, HHI said.
With the installation of the high efficiency engine, the containership will burn 20 percent less fuel per TEU in comparison with the 10,000 TEU containerships.
HHI built the world’s first 10,000 TEU containerships in 2010 and since then it has built 82, carrying more than 10,000 containers in the world.

World’s Largest Containership, first of five19,000-TEUs, named

CSCL Globe, the largest in the world containership, has been named, Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) announced. The first of five19,000-TEU vessels was ordered in May 2013 from China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL).
The event was held yesterday and was attended by the chairman of China Shipping Group, Xu Li Rong; the managing director of CSCL, Zhao Hong Zhou; the chairman and CEO of HHI; Choi Kil-seon, Chinese ambassador to Korea and some 150 guests.
The world's largest containership was given name by the Xu Li Rong's wife, He Li Jun. Within this month, CSCL Globe will be handed over to its owner. The container vessel will operate on the Asia-Europe trade loop.
The 77,200-bhp electronically controlled main engine, installed on the vessel, enhances fuel efficiency by automatically controlling fuel consumption according to the sea conditions and the speed of the vessel. Compared to a 10,000-TEU vessel, the high efficiency engine will lower the fuel consumption of CSCL Globe by 20%.
Four years ago, HHI built the first in the world 10,000-TEU containerships. Since then, the company has added 82 more.
CSCL Globe (IMO number 9695121 and MMSI 477712400) is 400 m long, its width is 58.6 m. The vessel is registered in Hong Kong and weights 186,000-GT.

The world’s biggest ship engine

After the launch of the record breaking CSCL Globe, Shipping Watch has reported on the world’s biggest engine that drives the gigantic 19,000 TEU vessel.

The engine has been built by German multinational MAN Diesel & Turbo and is known as the "low speed MAN B&W 12S90ME-C Mark 9.2 type."
The CSCL Globe itself was constructed by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, and is one in a series of five ships.
The engines for the 19,000 TEU vessels are anticipated to save 20% on fuel per TEU in comparison to 10,000 TEU ships.
CSCL’s decision to opt for the supersize ships is widely seen as a move in order to compete with the very top names in container shipping.
