Revealed: The Top 10 News Stories of 2014

It's been a fantastic year for PTI and we have seen stories hit records never witnessed before. Enjoy reading back on our top 10 of the year featuring stories, videos and countdowns from around the world.

Clinching the number one spot for 2014 is a concept with potentially revolutionary power. It's a story that has gripped the industry and inspired conversations concerning the future of port and terminal operations.
The article was based upon a video released by GRID Logistics featuring founder David Alba articulating his new-age concept for a container terminal revolution at the ports of LA and Long Beach. Not only does Alba's concept involve a huge mega-terminal, but also plans to reuse the network of unused drains in California to ease congestion and drastically quicken the supply chain. The article became so popular that it even got it's own story.

This piece has done remarkably well seeing as it was only released in December this year, which shows just how popular it has been. Not only has the story brought bustling traffic to the PTI website, but it has also broken records across PTI's social media output. Please pay PTI a visit at Twitter, or on Facebook.
The article raises some astounding facts that have been of interest to people inside and out of our industry.
Considering this is an image-heavy feature-style piece, it goes to show the importance of safety and the dangers in ports that made it so popular.
Perhaps why this piece got so many hits was the speed we broke the article and how unbelievable in nature it is. The sight of two mega-ships colliding is as transfixing as it is alarming. Thankfully, there were no casualties in the above incident between a Maersk Line and Hapag-Lloyd vessel, which took place in the Suez Canal.
In at 5 is a top 5 countdown featuring the world's biggest terminal operators, including DP WorldAPM Terminals and PSA. But who was number 1?
The opportunity to see a majestic containership from the inside out proved very popular with our readers. Maersk has had a busy year in 2014 after seeing its 'P3' vessel-sharing agreement get squashed byChina, and then reigniting alliance plans with P3 constituent MSC to form the '2M' vessel-sharing agreement.
Another big ship makes the top 10 in the form of CSCL's Globe, only this isn't any big ship, but the world's biggest container ship with a stunning total capacity of 19,000 TEU.
However, in this dynamic industry in which we have witnessed relentless growth in ship sizes, already the Globe looks to have its title taken by MSC, who, as PTI recently reported, are preparing to lauch the even bigger MSC Oscar
Neatly following on from the largest capacity container ship in the world is an article that questions this very state of affairs surrounding mega-ships. As ships get bigger and bigger, this article sought to figure out if this was a wholly beneficial situation for ports and terminals across the world. Not only was this popular on the PTI website, but it also inspired a fascinating conversation on the PTI LinkedIn page.
The high-performance of shipping related news articles vindicates a decision taken by PTI management to include shipping within our media output. In such a climate as the present in which liners and alliances dominate so much of what major ports and terminals must contemplate, shipping holds the key to world trade. This article counts down the world's biggest shipping lines.
Taking up the final spot in the top 10 is an article focussing on a video from marine engineer Claus Tuxen who exhibits the effects of a storm on a Maersk ship at sea. It certainly made gripping viewing.
And with that is the best of 2014. Thank you for reading, and we look forward to breaking more records in 2015.
