Maersk cuts Chennai-Algeciras ME5 run, removes 16pc from trade lane
FEEBLE demand has induced Maersk is close its Med, Red Sea, Indian subcontinent weekly ME-5 service, which will result in a 16 per cent capacity cut on the trade lane, reports Alphaliner.

The seven 4,500 to 4,900-TEU ships on the ME-5 service, calling at Chennai, Colombo, Salalah, Jeddah, Aqaba, Damietta, Algeciras, Valencia, Genoa, Port Said (SCCT), Aqaba, Jeddah, Djibouti, Salalah, Colombo and back to Chennai, first started the loop in January.

Maersk says the October closure of the loop will be compensated by enhancements of three other loops that Maersk operates on this trade, the ME-1 (connecting North Europe, ME, India), ME-2 (Med-ME) and ME-3 (Black Sea, Med, ME-India).

These strings will benefit from a yet-to-be disclosed extended port coverage, while a dedicated feeder shuttle will be launched between Maersk's hub port in Oman, serving Salalah, Chennai, Colombo, Chennai, Salalah, a route currently covered by the ME-5.

The current rotation of the ME-1/ME-2/ME-3 are: ME-1 : Felixstowe, Antwerp, Bremerhaven, Wilhelmshaven, Rotterdam, Aqaba, Jeddah, Jebel Ali, Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Salalah, Jeddah, Tangier, Felixstowe; the ME-2; Tangier, Algeciras, Valencia, Barcelona, Genoa, Port Said (SCCT), Jeddah, Salalah, Jebel Ali, Dammam, Jubail, Abu Dhabi (Mina Khalifa), Jebel Ali, Jeddah, Port Said (SCCT), Marsaxlokk and back to Tangier and finally the ME-3: Damietta, Mersin, Istanbul-Ambarli, Evyap, Novorossisk, Istanbul-Ambarli, Evyap, Izmir, Mersin, Iskenderun, Jeddah, Jebel Ali, Pipavav, Hazira, Nhava Sheva, Jebel Ali, Salalah and back to Damietta.

Apart from the addition of new port calls to these services, capacities are being raised on certain routes, with the ME-1 gradually getting 9,900-TEU ships, replacing 6,700-TEUers.

The ME-2 meanwhile will receive its first 10,000-TEUer on September 19, the new Maersk Guatemala, which will replace the 8,814-TEU Northern Jaguar, one of seven units of 8,400-8,800 TEU currently in service on the loop.

But the ME-3 will keep its 5,500-TEUers, the company said. Maersk's India - Middle East - USEC service MECL is also unaffected by the changes.
