CONTAINER GANTRY CRANE COMPONENT FAILURE [LONG BEACH, CA ~ 13 MARCH 2015]

Blueoceana Company received the two photographs shown below this evening, which, we understand, represents a container gantry crane at the facility Matson’s vessel call at in Long Beach, California on today’s date. The photographs appear to show one of the boom’s forestays separated from the machine’s A-Frame (apparently under load). The map inset shows the location of the facility within the port complex.
We know no more than what we see in the photos, and will make no guesses.
Events like this, however, raise serious questions related to crane maintenance, the useful life of container gantry cranes, the veracity of crane certification activities (which, in California, are predominantly under the jurisdiction of the CA Department of Industrial Relations ~ Cal OSHA) and requisite non- destructive testing of critical structural components at some point in the machine’s life. We hope to learn the answers to those questions.

Some Historical Information About The Crane At Issue:
  • Built for the Port of Long Beach (1990-1991); Now believed to be owned by the current terminal operator
  • Put into service: March 1991 (25 Years Old)
  • Kone Crane design; with Samsung Heavy Industries production/fabrication attributes
  • One of the last of the port’s cranes to be erected on site (as contrasted with roll-off-a-ship delivery)
