A ship building and repair company has been fined for the death of a worker who was hit by a mooring rope at its yard in Tipner Wharf, Portsmouth.
Hove Crown Court heard that employees of Diverse Ventures were using the rope to pull the jib of a ship-mounted crane back into position when it snapped under tension. The recoiling rope struck worker Paul Hudghton, 50, and he sustained significant head injuries.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigated the accident, which happened on 21 November 2012, and found there was no suitable or sufficient risk assessment while the task was being carried out. Hudghton, a freelance was not part of the work activity, the executive said, but he was standing in the operation’s danger zone.
Diverse Ventures pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act. It was fined £45,000 and must pay £9,000 prosecution costs.
