Associated British Ports (ABP) is set to seek permission for a major expansion of Southampton Docks.
The Dibden Bay project will hope to reclaim land on the New Forest side of Southampton Water which will double the size of the existing docks.
Alastair Welch, ABP Director, Southampton, said: "The Port of Southampton continues to be extremely busy. It is the UK's number one port for exports, handles £71bn of goods annually and supports 15,000 UK jobs.”
“Last month, we announced an investment of £50m to deliver additional multi-deck vehicle handling capacity in the port and to support growing export demand for British made vehicles in the next few years. Southampton is the UK's leading vehicle handling port but it needs more space if we are to continue to be able to connect the nation's automotive industry to global markets.”
ABP’s draft master plan is currently under consultation and available on the Southampton VTS website.
“Our plan sets out the likely need for further capacity development in the next 10-20 years. We will further develop our thinking following the completion of work on our masterplan over the coming months,” said Mr Welch.
The company is welcoming views and comments on its draft masterplan before the consultation period ends on November 25.
