For the Shipping Industry 2016 has been a crazy year.
Back in February we saw yet another alliance reshuffle with CMA CGM and Coscoaligning to create “The Mega Alliance,” taking on 2M. Industry giant Maersk confirmed the acquisition of competitor Hamburg Süd taking its global market share to 18.6%. And in the midst we saw the 7th largest container line in the world declare bankruptcy, the near 30 year old carrier Hanjin Shipping.
But it hasn’t been all doom and gloom, Panama celebrated the completion of the canal expansion in June with locals lining the locks to see the culmination of 9 years of work. The industry looked to set decisive emissions regulations, a positive sign that sustainability is finally being taken seriously… until reports hit claiming new arctic shipping routes were wreaking havoc on the environment.

We saw politics make waves in an industry already plagued by uncertainty. In June the UK was left reeling from the news Britain would be exiting the EU, leaving only speculation on what it will mean for the UK forwarding industry. Similarly the US presidency result also leaves a lot of question marks surrounding future trade.

Closer to home, 2016 for the Tuscor Lloyds family has been a roller coaster of a year. Many forwarders will have experienced a turbulent year but at Tuscor Lloyds the highs have definitely outweighed the lows!
We received AEO certification in May, along with one of the companies most successful years at the Breakbulk exhibition in Antwerp. The awards continued into July, with our air freight department receiving IATA accreditation. In September, we celebrated World Maritime Day, gladly reminded by the IMO that shipping is indispensable to the world.
Moving into autumn, we raised £344 for Macmillan Cancer Research with our coffee morning, a chance to open our doors and welcome surrounding businesses for a coffee and a piece of homemade cake. In fact it’s been a great year for making connections. We reached 2,000 followers on Twitter and had over 80,000 views on our website – with some of the most popular pages feature articles on our company blog.
Looking to the New Year there’s talk of shipping finally embracing technology, apps and tech start-ups are being developed across the market. The imbalance between supply and demand is still problematic as overcapacity continues to be the industries Achilles heel.
Maersk are optimistic for 2017, in the belief that the overcapacity is beginning to self correct – and maybe it will. Whatever 2017 holds for the industry, it’s safe to say everyone will be glad to see the back of 2016.
