Fire officials said an injured and trapped longshoreman was rescued this afternoon from a container ship at the Port of Oakland.
Firefighters were told at 1:53 p.m. that a longshoreman was trapped between two containers at Berth 57 at 1999 Middle Harbor Road, Battalion Chief Geoff Hunter said.
It looks like some containers shifted, which injured the person's leg and trapped them, Hunter said
The biggest trouble was getting the person off the boat because of a narrow platform from the boat to the dock, the chief said.
So firefighters used a small container on a crane to lift the longshoreman off the boat. The longshoreman was taken to Highland Hospital with injuries that needed attention in the hospital's trauma center, Hunter said.

Through friends in Northern California and elsewhere, Blueoceana Company has been made to understand that a serious accident occurred at a container terminal inthe Port of Oakland yesterday.
In that accident, a lasher was allegedly pinned beneath or between a stack of containers aboard a Hamburg Sud liner. What he was doing at the time, and how he came to be trapped are still maters of some conjecture right now. We've made inquires and hope to obtain further information to supplement the images below.
We do know that the Oakland Fire Department responded with four of its units, that a no wake zone was established by the US Coast Guard and that the lasher was extracted and taken to hospital.
Reports we've received indicate that the lasher, a member of ILWU Local 10, sustained a broken pelvis, a broken hip, a severely shattered leg (hip to ankle) and tendon separation at the ankle.

  1. Terribly scary event for that rigger. Hopefully he will make a full recovery. The crane driver should always know where men are working below. Short cuts may save seconds but your family need you home safe for Christmas. If it feels dodgey, don't do it
