Posting on behalf of the IDC / Dockers Hangarounds and Svein Lundeng
It is with great concern we have learned the Port of Bar Tender Committee for Privatization (Tender Committee) has accepted the offer at the public tender for privatization through the sale of 30% of the shares with the option of acquiring additional shares in the company “Port of Bar” JSC Bar.

We are aware the price that was offered by the only bidder in the tender for the purchase of shares is equal to one third of the nominal price of shares of the Port. We are also aware that the representative of the Union of Free Trade Unions is a member of the Tender Committee, a clear conflict of interest.

For these reasons, we condemn  the Tender Committee for the gross lack of transparency of this procedure, and want them to know  we remain ready to  take action should the interest of port workers in the Port of Bar be threatened in any way.

In December 2015, thousands of dockworkers who belong to the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria were fired by the by the National Ports Authority without any permanent alternative jobs or income. Today, they are struggling to support their families.

The sacking of these dockers did not fall within the standards that Nigeria agreed to when they ratified the International Labour Organization's Dock Worker Convention 1973 (No. 137). The Nigerian government must intervene now to help find a resolution and protect workers' rights!!

IDC asks you to sign a petition urging the Nigerian government to take action and help their dockworkers, and to share this message with your friends, family and fellow union members.
