The Swedish Dockworkers’ Union has issued notice of a new overtime ban entering into force today afternoon at the Port of Gothenburg’s APM Terminals (APMT)-operated container terminal.
The ban, which is part of an ongoing labour dispute, is expected to continue until midnight on April 30 unless the dispute is resolved earlier.
The planned ban includes overtime, the recruitment of new employees and the use of contract staff on evenings and weekends.
The Swedish National Mediation Office presented a new proposal to the parties, to which a response is set to be submitted to the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise office in Gothenburg by 10am today.
The ban only applies to APMT’s terminal at the Port of Gothenburg.
The Gothenburg Port Authority and APMT Gothenburg recently signed an extension to their existing agreement including a market share guarantee and a new investment programme worth a total of SEK250m (US$27.7m).
Both parts will run until 2024, with the planned investments to focus on improving customer service and productivity on both land and water.
Henrik Kristensen, CEO of APMT Gothenburg, said: “If we are to create long-term stability for our customers and employees, it is essential that we find a speedy solution to the current dispute at the container terminal.”
The port authority’s CEO Magnus Kårestedt said that the current focus is exclusively on resolving the trade union problems at the facility, which he argued is vital “to win back the confidence of the market”.
“Once a solution has been reached, the new agreement will offer excellent potential for future growth,” he added.
