MSC Sveva swings off the berth and heads out of Felixstowe. 13th April 2017

19224TEU MSC Sveva swings off the berth to starboard from Felixstowe Berth 9 with the assistance of two Svitzer tugs, heads out with a powered in-direct. The pilot boards from the shore side and requests the tugs. Duty tug the Svitzer Shotley was on a job helping the MSC Luciana depart from Berth 6. The plan was to get the Luciana out then mooring gang and tug to assist the Sveva. The pilot wants both tugs to be made fast on the centre leads fore and aft.

Svitzer Deben leaves the tug pontoon and makes her approach aft, crew onboard were preparing a heaving line ready for the Deben to make fast. The offshore lines were slackened and bought back onboard. As the MSC Luciana heads towards the Shelf outbound, Svitzer Shotley is released and makes her approach to the bow to be made fast on the centre lead.

Once both tugs were fast and in their pulling positions, the Sveva releases the spring lines. The pilot firstly gets the Svitzer Deben to pull straight off at 50% shortly followed by the Shotley pull off at 50%. As the she comes off the fenders the Deben increases to 75% then full to start the stern swinging. With space increasing on the starboard side bow to roughly 60-80 metres the Svitzer Shotley moves onto the starboard side and goes on at 50%. Bow thrusters working aswell the Sveva swings fairly swiftly and the Deben decreases power then goes all easy. The thrusters easing down, the pilot gets the Shotley to go all easy and get in a position to let go. Shotley comes ahead of MSC Sveva and slackens the line ready to be released, once the line is dropped off the Shotley breaks away on to the Felixstowe side then heads towards the tug pontoon.

The pilot informs the Deben that in a few minutes he would like a powered in-direct to help the mega ship around the 90° Beach End turn out of the harbour.
Passing the Fort Buoy the pilot gets the Deben to go out on the starboard side for a powered in-direct. As the Sveva was light the pilot had to use some starboard helm as the Deben caused a bit of over steer around the Beach End.

A team effort from the pilot, Svitzer tugs, Harwich VTS and the mooring gang keeps the ships moving at the Port of Felixstowe
