Port Operatives



Would you like to take on a varied role providing waterfront support to all ships and areas of the Portsmouth Naval Base? We are recruiting six Port Operatives at our site in Portsmouth.

Your main responsibilities as a Port Operative will involve: 
Working in a flexible manner in regards to work patterns as well as operating equipment and undertaking tasks as deemed necessary

Carrying out all aspects of cranes and MHE driving duties as requested by the company, operating all types and capacities i.e. dockside, mobile, gantry cranes and forklifts, telehandlers etc. This includes the use of information technology systems and any ancillary work connected with such operations
Additionally you will carry out all aspects of any other skill obtained in support of dockyard operations and work towards obtaining these licences; these may include but not limited to:
  • Forklift driver
  • Appointed person
  • Slinger, signaller and fleeter
  • Mechanical brow operative
  • Re-fuelling operative
  • Line Handler
  • Tow tractor driver
  • Stores assistant
  • All terrain telescopic telehandler
Your skills and qualifications:
Essential:
Good understanding of PUWER and LOLER regulations
Strong understanding of health and safety considerations
Knowledge of crane hand signals IAW BS 7121
Competent and experienced of general lifting operations using various lifting equipment within a maritime and facilities environment, conducting fleeting operations using various capacity chain blocks
Understanding of de-rating of lifting equipment and accessories dependent on geometry and mode of use
Fully understands the difference between standard and complex lifts
Desirable:
It would be advantageous to hold a valid mobile all terrain licence for a minimum of three years and experience of operating various capacity cranes or/and any other relevant licences / certificates i.e. LGV Class C / HGV 2, dockside crane, forklift truck, slinging, appointed person (lifting) etc.
