Palm Beach Harbor Pilots

Palm Beach Inlet has unique dangers and risks. The Gulfstream Current runs directly up the jetties creating a sideways drift. Deep water and open swell create two of the best big-wave surfing spots on the East Coast: "Reef Road" and "The Pump House". Situated between is the Palm Beach / Lake Worth Inlet Entrance Channel. This is home to the Palm Beach Harbor Pilots and one of the most challenging ship channels in Florida. The Pilots lost their Pilot Boat in the storm of '91 (never to be found) and had another nearly lost on the north jetty. The narrow entrance, winter shoals, tight slips, and numerous vessel traffic pose additional challenges to the Pilots that work this channel day and night, 365 days a year.
