Container ships are cargo ships that carry all of their load in truck-size intermodal containers, in a technique called containerization. They are a common means of commercial intermodal freight transport and now carry most seagoing non-bulk cargo.
The size of a container ship is defined throughout the world in terms of Twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) capacity. So here we have a list of the world’s largest Containerships, ranked in terms of their TEU capacity, among others in 2017.

12. Emma Maersk

Emma Mærsk is the first container ship in theE-class of eight owned by the A. P. Moller-Maersk Group. When launched in 2006 she was the largest container ship ever built, and in 2010 she and her seven sister ships were among the longest container ships. Officially, she is able to carry around 11,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) or 14,770TEU +1000 TEU (reefers) depending on definition. In May 2010, her sister ship Ebba Mærsk set a record of 15,011 TEU in TangerMed.

On 6 November 2012, it became the largest container ship in the world measured by capacity 16,020 TEU, but was surpassed on 24 February 2013 by the Maersk Triple E 4 class (18,270 TEU), which is 4 metres (13.1 ft) longer at precisely 400m in length. It is named for Venitian merchant and traveller Marco Polo.

MSC NEW YORK is a container ship built in 2014 and currently sailing under the flag of Panama. MSC NEW YORK has 399m length overall and beam of 54m. Her gross tonnage is 176490 tons and has a capacity of 16652 TEU.

As the deadweight tonnage of the ship is 197,362DWT, she can only carry a full load of containers if each has a mean weight not exceeding 10.2 tons. With average 14-tonne containers, the capacity is around 14,000 TEU.

MSC ANNA length overall (LOA) is 399.98 m, beam is 58.6 m and maximum draught is30.5 m. Her container capacity is 19368 TEU. The ship is operated by MSC MEDITERRANEAN SHIPPING CO.

3. MOL Triumph

MOL’s newest vessel, the first of a fleet of six 20,000 TEU-class containerships for the company, it is the 2nd largest container ship in the world. was named MOL Triumph in a ceremony at SHI in South Korea on March 15, 2017. At 400 meters in length and 58.8 meters in width, MOL Triumph is currently the world’s largest containership. With a capacity of 20,170 TEU, the vessel is the first 20,000 TEU-class containership deployed in THE Alliance’s Asia to Europe trade via the FE2 service.

Danish container shipping major Maersk Line has taken delivery of Madrid Maersk in April 2017, a 20,568 TEU boxship, from South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), the shipping company told World Maritime News.
The 196,000 gross-ton Madrid Maersk features a length of 399 meters and a width of 58.6 meters.Maersk Madrid belongs to the 2nd generation of the company’s Triple-E class of vessels and is the first of 11 ships ordered from DSME back in 2015. Even though the official capacity rating of the ships was set to 19,630 TEU, Maersk Line seems to have modified the design resulting in breaking of the 20,000 TEU mark.

OOCL Hong Kong is the largest container shipyet built, and the third container ship to surpass the 20,000 Twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) threshold. She was built at theSamsung Heavy Industries, Geoje shipyard with yard number 2172 and delivered in May 2017. OOCL Hong Kong has a capacity of 21,413 TEUs, and will serve the route to North Europe from Shanghai, Ningbo, Xiamen, Yantian, Singapore, via Suez Canal, Felixstowe, Rotterdam, Gdansk, Wilhelmshaven, Felixstowe, via Suez Canal, Singapore, Yantian, Shanghai in a 77-day round trip.
