The UK’s top export port Southampton will spend an average of £75,000 a day on its infrastructure in 2018 to meet its customers’ requirements.
That’s according to port director Alastair Welch, who said that another record-breaking year is expected for the facility across the container, bulk, cruise and automotive areas.
He added that 2018 will see even bigger ships visiting the port following the success of 2017, during which the port handled over a million containers and saw the world’s biggest vessels visit Southampton.
“We'll be working hard to ensure the port continues to deliver the best possible service for our customers, maintaining its position as the nation's gateway to the world,” Mr Welch said.
The port handles £40bn in exports each year and its total trade handled is worth some £75bn.
It is also the UK’s top cruise port and automotive exports port, as well as home to the country’s second-biggest container terminal.
ABP has launched a short film highlighting what it describes as the port’s “vital role as the nation's ‘Gateway to the World’”.
"Our new film shows why the Port of Southampton is so important for the regional and national economy,” said Mr Welch.
