Update: Container Ships Collision At Karachi Port

Following collision of container ships in Karachi Port on Monday, Karachi Port Trust (KPT) had ordered an investigation and suspended port operations until fallen containers were cleared from the water.
However, according to an anonymous source (a high ranking KPT official), London Underwriters and their lawyers are underway to claim KPT for recovery of damages to Hapag Lloyd container ship TOLTEN when she collided with a ship berthed at SABT.
According to the source, the pilot on board the ill-fated container ship is not only medically unfit but also not licensed to handle any ship, the reason being he has been deceiving KPT by using an expired COC (certificate of competency), on which basis, the license is issued (thus deceiving the authorities by using an expired license is a criminal offence).
In most of the countries, pilots need a valid COC and the port authority is responsible for checking the same. The underwriters are very much surprised by this development and have contacted Capt. Anwar Shah ex. DG port and shipping Pakistan regarding the same. The pilot was taken to PNS Shifa for his medical which is mandatory after an accident but was refused, and eventually the medical was held at Jinnah Hospital at 2 AM. The results of the tests are still awaited.

Large container ships HAMBURG BAY and TOLTEN collided at Karachi Harbor in the morning Mar 19, details yet unknown, but judging from tracks, collision happened when TOLTEN was maneuvering on arrival. More than 10 containers, some of them damaged, fell overboard. No information yet on damages sustained by ships, probably serious, because there are three tugs at ships’ side. Photo

Taking two ships on Karachi port 10 containers fall into the sea

Two container vessels were collided at Karachi port, suspending the sea traffic at the South Asia Port Terminal (SAPT), sources said Monday.




Copied from the "Operators" FB page, the attached video clip is interesting (but will hurt your neck to watch in its entirety). It depicts a Hapag Lloyd container vessel (C/V TOLTEN) attempting to dock at Karachi, Pakistan earlier today. 
As the pilot tries to slide the ship into its berth, he comes in far too close to C/V HAMBURG BAY (whom we believe to be under current charter to Zim Lines), which is docked and working. 
Port side container stows aboard the Hapag ship allide with the flared bow of C/V HAMBURG BAY, and whole stacks are unshipped, falling into Karachi harbor.
Just a bit closer and secondary contact would have been made with the dockside container gantry cranes, bringing them down... Think about it.

A: Reefers generally will (for quite awhile), but dry boxes nearly always go to the bottom within a short space of time.
