Svitzer halts Baltic Ace salvage operation

The Danish salvage company Svitzer has set the salvage of the sunken ship Baltic Ace on hold. The car transportation ship sank on 5 December last year after colliding with a container ship near the entrance to Rotterdam.
The water temperature is so low that the 466 tonnes of bunker oil located in the ship's tanks is in solid state. In addition, there is still very bad weather in the area.

It is now up to the shipping company and the insurance company to decide how to proceed with salvage. Svitzer points to several possibilities. One is, inter alia, to pump sea water into the tanks to push the oil out. Another is to use heating coils to heat the oil until it assumes a liquid form.

Dutch fishermen recently found the body of Baltic Ace's Polish first mate. And so six of the 11 dead sailors have been found.

13 crew members were rescued alive from the Baltic Ace, which sank 15 minutes after it had collided with the container ship Corvus J. The ship was less severely damaged by the collision.

The reason for the accident has still not been established.
