Europe-North America quarterly box volumes up 3.3pc to 918,100 TEU

CONTAINER volumes on the transatlantic trade increased in both directions during the second quarter, while freight rates held steady.




The latest figures from Container Trades Statistics show that box volumes from Europe to North America increased 3.3 per cent year on year during the second quarter to 918,100 TEU, and during the first six months of the year, volumes were up 1.7 per cent year on year to 1.8 million TEU.

Seaspan to build and charter five 14,000-TEUers to Yang Ming Marine 



HONG KONG administered, but Vancouver headquartered, Seaspan Corporation announced that it has signed a long-term, fixed-rate time charter contracts with Yang Ming Marine Transport for the five 14,000-TEU newbuildings.

Seaspan, a shipowner charterer, previously announced the vessels, to be delivered in 2015, will be built at Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries, according to contracts signed in July.  



Asia-Europe spot rates up to $1,501/TEU, Transpac hits $2,069/FEU 
SPOT container rates from Asia to Europe measured by the Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SCFI) increased last week following a series of US$500 per TEU rate hikes announced for August 1.

Maersk Line and CMA CGM join September rate push on Asia-Europe trade

THE world’s largest container shipping line Maersk Line and number three carrier CMA CGM have added their weight to attempts to increase rates on the Asia-Europe trade in September


  • Maersk Line not only has its eight 15,500 teu ‘E-class’ units of the EMMA MAERSK type, but is also gradually phasing in 20 ‘EEE-class’ ships of 18,270 teu.
  • MSC is to take delivery in 2014 and 2015 of six 16,000 teu vessels chartered from London-based Zodiac (four units) and Singapore’s Eastern Pacific (two units). The ships are to be built ar STX Jinhae in South Korea. In addition, MSC is rumored to be the charterer of three 18,000 teu ships that Hong Kong Asset Management ordered at DSME.
