The Haven Gateway is the UK’s principal gateway for boxed freight and includes the UK’s largest container port - the Port of Felixstowe. However, there are five other Haven ports – Ipswich, Harwich International Port and Harwich Navyard, Mistley and Brightlingsea. Ipswich is the largest agri-port in the UK and Harwich International a major passenger gateway and the UK’s third largest cruise port.

40% of all the UK’s freight crosses the Orwell Bridge and the port, with its deep sea facilities and close proximity to the Channel shipping lanes, Felixstowe is first point of call in Europe to the world’s largest freight ships. With Phase 1 of the Felixstowe South configuration now open following a major investment by its owners, Hutchison Ports, capacity at Felixstowe has been expanded substantially This has been accompanied by the completion of the new third rail terminal enabling Felixstowe to move more containers than ever by rail.



The Ports and Logistics industry is extremely important to the economy of the Haven Gateway sub region. It provides some 32,000 jobs across the Haven Gateway
