UK – DP World London Gatewayannounced today that it had become the first port in the country to lift four containers at one time on its quay cranes, doubling the amount of boxes it can lift in one go. Using a suitable spreader one of the giant quay cranes, which we have featured previously, is capable of handling four twenty foot, or two forty foot containers at a time, doubling the efficiency and reducing the number of lifts, and thus the vessel turnaround time.
The new deep water port has made much of the fact that it has proved largely immune to the vagaries of the winter weather, keeping land side operations running at a time when other ports were forced to close with four added port calls for vessels unable to access their normal facilities. These included theMaersk Gudrun at 367 metres long the longest container ship to ever travel up the Thames, a record which DP World are hoping will be broken many time in the coming years as the port picks up more custom.
The investment in the new London port is a huge one but the Dubai based group has a portfolio of more than 65 marine terminals across six continents with box handling accounting for over 75% of company revenue and fifty six million TEU moved in 2012 worldwide. Speaking of the latest development at London Gateway, Andrew Bowen, Engineering Director said:
“This is an excellent example of DP World innovation at London Gateway. We’ve engineered a system that allows us to double the number of containers we move safely and quickly. By introducing the tandem lift for two forty foot containers to our operations, we will be able to improve productivity that will allow vessels to be turned around faster and cargo to move on to its final destination more efficiently.
“The culture at DP World London Gateway encourages us to innovate and improve supply chains and we look forward to continuous improvements in the future. We have already enhanced the size of the cranes to be some of the largest in the world, capable of handling the largest vessels in the world. They also come with cutting edge automation technology.”
DP World’s new London Gateway port is increasing productivity with new twin lift spreaders, and gained extra ship calls during December 2013′s bad weather.
