Eight Missing after Ship Collision off Tokyo Bay (Japan)


Eight out of twenty crew members from the sunken ship, all Chinese nationals, are still missing after the accident, the local coastguard stated. One crew member of the remaining twelve that have been saved is said to have been seriously injured.
Nobody was injured on the other ship.
Japanese Coast Guard has sent nineteen patrol vessels and 2 helicopters to the scene to look for the missing people.
The cause of the collision is still unknown.
Japan’s Transportation Safety Board has initiated an investigation into the accident.


The Japan Times wrote that 12 of Beagle III’s 20 crew were rescued by nearby passenger vessel and Japan Coast Guard patrol ship, 1 of those rescued later died. 8 are missing. Some kind of a panic took place on board of Pegasus Prime, whose 14 crew tried to leave the vessel on a life boat, and two of them were injured. Judging for The Japan Times photo, Pegasus Prime is severely damaged, but remained afloat and capable of sailing under own power. Vessel was last seen on AIS at 1930 UTC Mar 18 approaching Yokohama, escorted by 3 or 4 tugs.
Freighter Beagle II sank after collision with boxship Pegasus Prime, Tokyo Bay
Taiwanese general cargo vessel Beagle III collided with Korean feeder boxship Pegasus Prime at around 0310 LT Mar 18 in the Uraga waterway, mouth of the Tokyo Bay, Japan. Vessels were on opposite courses, Pegasus Prime was en route from Busan to Tokyo, Beagle III was en route from Yokohama to Kobe. Beagle III loaded with steel coils sank. There were 20 crew on board, all Chinese. 11 or 12 were rescued, 8 or 9 are missing. Pegasus Prime presumably suffered some damages, but according to AIS, stayed afloat and is capable of moving under own power, crew safe. S&R under way.
On Mar 14 another freighter of Taiwanese owner Wisdom Marine Lines, m/v Genius Star VII, collided with oil barge in the Houston Channel, suffering substantional damage.
