The largest ship ever to enter the Thames is due to call at DP World London Gateway at the weekend, with estimated time of arrival in the early hours of Sunday morning, October 19.
The 397-metre-long, 56-metre-wide Edith Maersk has a draught of 16 metres and can carry up to 15,500 standard containers.

Not sure about the unloading bit of this ship as it is leaving Felixstowe 75% full and topping up with empties at Gateway before heading back to the far east.
Largest ship to sail on Thames reaches London Gateway
The largest ever ship to enter the River Thames has arrived.
The 397m (1,300ft) long, 56m (180ft) wide ship can carry up to 15,500 containers and is the second largest container ship in the world.
Called Edith Maersk, it docked at 06:00 BST at London Gateway having sailed from the Far East. It is due to set sail again later.
It is the biggest ship to stop at the deep water dock, which opened last year after a £1.5bn build.
Located 20 miles (32km) down the River Thames from London in Essex, it is one of three docks in the UK which is capable of handling the large container ships, known as Triple-E. The other two are Felixstowe and Southampton.
Following the arrival of Edith Maersk, which was carrying goods such as clothes and electronics, it is hoped that many more large container ships will use the dock.

10 high on a deck and could have gone 11 high...

Delete•Stackweight limit: Each vessel has a limit to the number of containers that can be stacked on top of each other. The Triple-E can be loaded with a maximum of 11 containers below the deck and 10 containers on deck. However, containers should not obstruct the view from the bridge.

As far as I was aware Felixstowes cranes are able the fully service these vessels.

DeleteEdith Maersk is a E class vessel, sister ship of Emma Maersk and these ships have been serviced at Felixstowe for sometime without issues.

DeleteLondon gateway is a joke ,i suppose there be promotional videos of the hairdresser and her mates driving the cranes to show how equal opportunity's work ,also hear rumors of the banks pulling the money out of the new cranes on order for berth 3 until they actually get more than five small ships a week and actually start to make a profit ,im sure that no shipping company's will pull out from felixstow as there new berth is more than adequate to unload the triple e class with ease,and they have the proper skilled labour not university graduates that are there to fill a void until they can complete there courses ,why would the leave there with all the infrastructure and go to a place run by inexperienced people who most of them have never seen a winter on a ship in the cold whilst out rigging ,how many of them will survive through till February before they relise a office job is the better option ,a docker is a hardened breed who works all kinds of weather and shifts .As a previous post said is LONDON GATEWAY a big white elephant .

Deleteyou must be on drugs! do you really not think that this ship and the last few are testers sent up the river by Maersk, yes there are a few inexperienced workers at LGW but did you come out of your mothers womb a crane driver? no didnt think so, we all have to start somewhere. LGW will be a power house given a bit of time. Felixstowe needs to wake up. I do believe gateway has won awards for its truck turn around times and rail head so we really must be doing very badly indeed............

ReplyDeleteWhat poor performance is that then? Don't think we hear any of the shipping lines complaining, or the hauliers about turn around time. You try working a vessel with upside down twist locks and see how good you do!

DeleteA lot more than that but thanks for asking. It would have helped if the dockers in Felixstowe acted like adults and didn't deliberately mess around with all the twistlocks. But it's what we have come to expect from them.... C'est la vie!
