5 Port of Los Angeles cargo containers fall from ship into water


Five stacked cargo containers fell from a ship into the Port of Los Angeles late this morning, officials said.
There are no reported injuries from the accident at Berth 402 in the APM Terminal.
Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said fireboats were called in to assist at 10:39 a.m.
Officials did not disclose the name of the ship or the contents of the containers. How the accident occurred also was not released.
Shipping officials and port police are on scene and will likely use their own equipment to retrieve the containers, Humphrey said.
No further details were available.

Humphrey says the accident happened at Berth 402, which is operated by APM Terminals.
Television news showed the containers still connected as they floated alongside a huge cargo ship. One of the containers was smashed in.
APM did not immediately return a call seeking information.
