After an explosion and subsequent fire broke out in 2012 on board the containership MSC Flaminia, one that killed three crew-members and heavily damaged the ship and cargo, the owner Reederei NSB reports today she will soon be returned to service after extensive repairs were carried out at the Daewoo shipyard in Mangalia, Romania.
The vessel still bears the name MSC Flaminia, but the owner notes, she is “fundamentally optimized for the challenges of the current shipping market.”
Modifications include a new bulbous bow and new propeller which Bozidar Petrovic, Vice President at Reederei NSB notes will save upwards of 12 percent in fuel costs under ideal conditions.
In addition, the middle sections of the vessel were completely exchanged, the electric installation was overhauled and major parts of the superstructure were renovated, according to a press release today.
