Maritime Bulletin Accidents

A major fire broke out of a container ship off the coast of Hong Kong on the evening of September 19, 2016, reported Splash247.

The 2,200 TEU Wan Hai 307 containership is still smoking, and the Hong Kong Marine Department is upholding a no-go area around the vessel, the crew has been evacuated after they attempted to tackle the fire.

No reports have been released of any injury or fatality of either the crew or civilians, PTI will report updates if and when they are released.

Earlier in September, 2016, a fire broke out on another containership in the port of Houston, closing all operations in the port for an entire day.

An independent study Commissioned by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and carried out by Cardiff University was released addressing some of the major safety concerns facing ports.

Richard Jones, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at IOSH, said of the study: “Key messages include the need for operators to regularly review their health and safety systems, particularly how their contractor-workforce is managed, how health and wellbeing are assured and how worker involvement is fostered."
