Cscl Atlantic Ocean departing Felixstowe Berth 8 with 3 tugs 17th March 2017

Apologies for the wind from 4mins 50secs onwards. I tried as hard as I could to reduce the wind noise.

400 metre CSCL Atlantic Ocean sails from Felixstowe Berth 8 with a draft of 14.4 metres for Rotterdam.

The Captain onboard ordered 2 tugs for departure both centre leads fore and aft but as the pilot boarded from the shore side the winds were increasing to 18 - 29 knots so a decision between the captain and pilot was made to have a third tug made fast on the starboard quarter.

Svitzer Deben was made fast on the centre lead aft, Svitzer Stanford was made fast on the starboard quarter and the Svitzer Sky was made fast on the centre lead forward.

The mooring gang arrived and was briefed of the plan and waited for the tugs to be made fast before the fore and aft line were slackened and released from the bollards, Spring line were the last to be released.

The pilot and captain were on the bridge wing over looking the portside of the ship coming away from the berth as all three tugs went straight back at 50% off the quay. The wind pushing on the starboard side so the Svitzer Sky then goes up to full power and shortly after the aft tugs increased to 75% to counteract the wind the full power.

As she comes into the channel the pilot releases the Svitzer Stanford from the quarter and then the Svitzer Sky from forward the comes ahead on the main engine keeping the Svitzer Deben aft for a powered in-direct around the 90deg Beach End out of the harbour.

Powered in-direct is almost a daily operation for the tugs as more and more 400 metre vessels visits Felixstowe each week.

News has just broken this week that Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) have just named their world record breaker MOL Triumph 20150 TEU vessel due to be delivered on the 27th March 2017 but will soon be taken off the hot spot by Maersk Line and OOCL in the next couple of months.
