The general cargo ship San Rafael suffered cargo shift and lost several container in Atlantic Ocean during a voyage from Namibe (Angola) to Vigo (Spain). The ship succeeded to prevent list by ballasting and successfully arrived at the port of destination with several shifted and collapsed containers stacks hanging over the starboard side on the main deck. According to the photos it looks that some container fell over board, but reason for the accident and root cause are under investigation and not yet known. The general cargo ship San Rafael successfully docked in Vigo, where will be unloaded the necessary containers and will be stowed the shifted ones. The vessel will be stabilized and will be allowed to return in service and resume voyage.
However, the Port Authority indicated that there is no serious damage and there were no grounds for distress and vessel was stable. The investigation for the root cause is under way. It is not confirmed if vessel lost containers in Atlantic Ocean and where exactly the accident happened.
The general cargo ship San Rafael (IMO: 9231133) has overall length of 192.00 m, moulded beam of 28.00 m and maximum draft of 8.50 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 30,000 DWT and the gross tonnage is 23,132 GRT. The ship was built in 2003 in Dalian Shipyard in China.
