Crane Drivers And Stevedores Favourite Attachment

Ron Signorino My recollection, is that devices like this one had their origins in Hamburg (late 1980's), and have modestly spread to several other European ports. Various versions are now in use, including a more recent one of Dutch design appearing at a few U.S. ports (see photo). A secondary means of connection to the spreader is typically employed, so that reliance on twist locks alone is avoided. Given good maintenance and safe operation on the part of crane operators and the workers manning the device, they are deployed with great success. The downside, if there is one... is that their use ties up utility of a gantry crane for other work.
