Accident At Vaasa Harbor – Cargo Ship Arrived At The Dock Without A Tugboat And Crashed Into The Crane

The collision in the port caused large material damage. The cause of this exceptional accident is was the lack of a tugboat.

A threatening situation occurred on Sunday in Vaasa harbor when a large cargo ship crashed into the harbor and knocked down the crane. A 138-meter Caribbean flag ship that was making deliveries from Vaasa harbor, crashed the dock.
The broken crane was old, so the material damages remain small. However, the ship was the one who got the worst part of the crash.
There were all the elements for a bigger accident, but fortunately nothing major happened, a big crane and a lightbulb beside the area where the main damage occur , the most important thing is that there was no personal injury, says Marketing Manager Markus Rönnblom of the Kvarken Ports.

This was an exceptional case, for some reason, the ship did not use the tugboat when it came to the port. At the time of the event, a moderately wind was blowing, which could have caused the ship to drift towards the dock and the crane that was destroyed by the collision.
“There was an experienced pilot and captain involved, and they decided not to use a tug,” says Rönnblom.
Kristian Mäki-Jussila, the security officer at the Kvarken Port, also acknowledges that tugboats or tugs have not been used yesterday for landing. According to Finnpilot Pilotage Oy, which is responsible for the pilotage of the tugs, the desicion depends always on the captain of the ship.
