As the General Lighthouse Authority for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar, we are a world leader in the provision of aids to navigation. Providing nearly 600 aids to navigation, the service uses three ships and new technology to deliver a leading-edge service.

You will undergo onboard training over a one year period that will include all aspects of the vessel’s operations. At the end of this period the successful candidate will attend college to undertake statutory training to qualify as an Efficient Deck Hand.

To meet the requirements for this post you must demonstrate a genuine interest in being away at sea, working in a physical role. Previous experience working on boats would be advantageous, although not essential. You must be a good team worker and be able to work well with all departments of the ship’s crew. You should have the initiative and the maturity to work unsupervised, accept responsibility and be willing to learn and develop new skills. As a deck rating much of the work you do will be practical, hands on work, so you must be confident to operate technical equipment.

The periods of duty are 21 days afloat, followed by 21 days free from duty, this cycle repeated throughout the year. You will be required to attend college for one week’s safety training prior to being assigned to a ship.

Subject to satisfactory performance, the training period may be extended for an additional two years to enable qualification to Able Seaman (AB). Permanent employment with Trinity House may only be possible if a suitable vacancy arises at the end of the training period.

If you are interested in this opportunity and keen to develop your skills and experience with Trinity House, then please complete the application process.
